Artist Statement
To encourage and challenge are the general motivators in my
work. While my goals vary in subject
and medium, I always hope to challenge accepted notions or encourage thought
from viewers.
I work with my digital Cannon Rebel T4i, and use Photoshop for
final edits. This process allows for immersion in the experience while
shooting, and adjusting small details to best communicate tone through color
and other formal elements like texture later. I also enjoy seeking new
perspectives to achieve a variety of compositions. I am always climbing,
balancing, and crouching to get a new angle for a photograph.
In this photography series, I reflect on the impact and
integration of man and nature. The positive way that people interact with
nature is an emotional and often neglected idea. The variety of subjects
express the vast opportunities that people have to connect with nature, through
water, buildings, meditation, trees, and gardens. Man considers the treatment
of nature when beginning new projects and builds positive memories in each of
these spaces. The spontaneous natural life upon planned structures is fun juxtaposition
and reminder about control. The mental and physical benefits of immersing
yourself in nature are important and often forgotten. However, for people of
all ages the positive experiences had within nature, whether they are in a field,
a park, by a damn, or a garden, are significant moments of happiness. Through
this series, I encourage a renewed connection to nature, and challenge the
common idea that mans impact on nature is purely negative.
